The Tower of London - Village Hall Talk - 23rd January
By CW

December 31, 2009:

History red in tooth and claw comes vividly to life in the latest talk at Belstone Village Hall when Mel Stride reveals all about the bloody past of the Tower of London.  We all know the Crown Jewels are kept there, but what about Captain Blood, the man who tried to pinch them?  Lots of famous people were incarcerated there and usually they didn’t make it out alive – discover who was beheaded, who was hung, drawn and quartered, and who just plain vanished.   On the lighter side did you know that one of the famous ravens had to be ‘dismissed’ for eating TV aerials … and that the oldest, who was called Jim Crow, lived for 44 years?

As an accredited Blue Badge Tourist Guide for London, who won the Tourist Board ‘Guide of the Year Award’ in 2005, Mel is the perfect host to lead us through the dark corners of this ancient fortress.  The illustrated talk begins at 7.30pm on Saturday 23 January; as usual refreshments will be available in the interval and donations will be invited for Hall funds and the Children's Hospice South West.
