The North Dartmoor Garden Club is friendly group of garden lovers – but not necessarily gardeners.
The season starts on 24th September when we welcome back Dr Ken Thompson with a talk entitled ‘Plants Behaving Badly’. Basically, he will be talking about weeds. What is a weed, why are some weeds so successful, and should we worry about them? Finally, what can we do about them? Ken is an experienced ecologist and author who spent most of his career at Sheffield University and has now retired to Devon. In 2016 he was awarded the Royal Horticultural Society’s Veitch Memorial Medal for his contribution to the advancement and improvement of the science and practice of horticulture
The club meets on the fourth Thursday of the month from September to April at 7.30pm in Belstone Village Hall. Doors open at 7pm with a welcome cup of tea and an opportunity to chat. Our members come from a wide area, including Chagford, Okehampton and all the surrounding villages. The club welcomes new members and guests – at £15 membership for the year, it is very good value for money. Guests £4 for an evening.
The Village Hall in Belstone EX20 1RB is easily found by following signs for Belstone from the A30 and is situated opposite the large car park as you enter the village.
At our 22nd October meeting well known naturalist John Walters will be giving a talk ‘The Secret World of the Undergrowth’. From Ivy Bees and Heath Potter Wasps to slug-munching Blue Ground Beetles and insect-eating Sundews, John will bring these incredible mini beasts to life through photos, video clips and field sketches.
