Belstone Village Hall 7.30pm 23rd October – speaker Ken Thompson
Ken’s talk ‘No Nettles Required – the Truth About Wildlife Gardening‘ will be based on his book of the same name. Doors open 7pm. This meeting is open to all, either join the club £15 for the season or just come as a guest for £4. Ample parking opposite the village hall. You will be sure of a warm welcome.
Ken is a retired academic who now lives in Devon, but spent most of his career at Sheffield University. He frequently speaks to gardening clubs and societies, and teaches garden ecology on the Kew Horticulture Diploma. He was for 16 years a member of RHS Science Committee. For ten years he wrote a regular gardening column for the Daily Telegraph, but now writes chiefly for Which? Gardening. He has published several books on gardening and popular science. His latest book, on Britain’s commonest plants, was published by Profile Books in 2023.
In 2016 he was awarded the Royal Horticultural Society’s Veitch Memorial Medal for his contribution to the Advancement and Improvement of the Science and Practice of Horticulture.
Ken will use the latest research to examine the myths about wildlife gardening. Are native plants better for wildlife? How do compost heaps impact on wildlife? What the ideal wildlife garden doesn’t need, and many more questions will be answered, as he delves into the research around a wide variety of gardening conundrums.
Ken will be bringing along a selection of his books for sale.
