West Devon Borough Council January 2022 – Report from Cllr Lynn Daniel

West Devon Borough Councillor Report January 2022

Omicron Hospitality and Leisure Grant

Omicron virus image

In December, the government announced a one-off grant payment for hospitality and leisure businesses including restaurants and pubs. It is worth up to £6,000 and is designed to help those who have struggled in what should have been the most profitable time of the year.

WDBC are administering the Omicron Hospitality and Leisure Grant; the Council has now directly contacted local businesses by email, which, based on previous grant applications, might be eligible for this financial help. The Council is urging local hospitality and leisure businesses that meet the criteria to check their email and junk mail folders and follow the instructions to claim the government grant.

The Council is urging businesses to contact them via our website – www.westdevon.gov.uk/covid19business – if they think their business is eligible.

Free Debt Awareness Training

  • Do you want to become more aware of debt?
  • Its impact?
  • How you and your organisation could help to identify and refer people for support?

Answer yes to any of the above and our FREE interactive debt awareness training could be for you!

The ‘Transitions’ project has worked across the Districts of West Devon and Torridge for the last five years providing free debt and money advice to people who are unable to access mainstream support services.

The training will take 1-2 hours and is based on real life case studies. The training will explore:

  • the causes of debt
  • the impact of debt and poverty
  • the ways these manifest themselves
  • practical ways forward.

Watching Council Meetings

Following the Government’s announcements on the COVID alert levels now being raised to level 4 – we would like to remind anyone who wants to watch our Council Meetings that the safest way to do this is via our live streams. This can be done safely on YouTube, here on Facebook or on our engagement portal.

• Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/westdevonboroughcouncil

• YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDZEXV47SxBpXUDR6qbhtiA

• Portal – https://www.engagement.westdevon.gov.uk/

Although decision making continues to take place in person; due to the increased risk and to protect everyone involved, we are strictly abiding by our Health and Safety policies. Therefore, we are limiting the number of people in all meeting rooms to safe numbers. Priority for those attending the meeting in person will be given to the members of the committees and those people directly participating in the meeting.

Thank you for your continued patience at this difficult time.
