Report from James McInnes Devon County Council
Summer Update Hatherleigh and Chagford Division
Evening all,
Last week we had a landslide general election and now we have a new government. Devon County Council will be working with Devon’s MPs for the residents of Devon, and with the new government.
At the County Council we had a balanced budget last year 2023/24 and the budget in year 2024/25 is under control. Preparations for the 2025/26 budget are coming together well.
As a result of good financial management we have been able to put an extra £12 million into highways and drainage, in this financial year. This will not deal with all the highway issues, but it is a good start and we are developing an highway investment plan for future years. Don’t forget to report potholes :- www.devon.gov.uk/roads-and-transport/report-a-problem/report-a-pothole/
Adult Social Care is preparing for a Care Quality Commission inspection sometime this year. We had a Peer Review last year that highlighted some good practise and work continues to improve services. It is a challenging environment for care providers. I visited a care home provider earlier in the year and learnt about the challenges they are facing re staffing costs etc. We must also not forget unpaid carers who keep the social care system afloat.
Childrens Services are making progress and we are expecting an ofsted inspection in the autumn. I attended a children in care celebration event last week. It was emotional to see the children having a good time and receiving their awards.
A lot of work is going into modernising how the County Council operates. Breaking down silo working and being more agile. We also need to simplify our processes.
Locally don’t forget the Locality Budget. A LB grant can help a community project get started. Come back to me if you want more information.
Very happy to attend a Town or Parish Council meeting.
Best wishes, James
